Camping & Overlanding
Shelter, sleep, and a kitchen that works — for truck camping, trailheads, and two-track weekends. November is gift season for this hub; the trip content banks up over winter and lands for spring. Everything here is chosen the same way: specs first, owner data second, price third.

System 03
The Camp Kitchen System
Stove, fuel, cold storage, water, and cleanup organized as one kit that cooks real food anywhere a truck can park.

The 2026 Stout List
Camp gear dominates the gift guides for a reason — it's the category where a $50 item gets used for a decade. Start there if you're buying for someone else.

Sleep is a temperature system
Bag ratings assume a pad underneath. Pad R-value is the number that matters: R 4+ for three-season ground, R 5.5+ for winter. A $400 bag on a foam pad is a cold night; a mid-range bag on a proper insulated pad is a warm one. Buy the pad first.
Tent weights are a shell game
"Trail weight" excludes stakes and stuff sacks; "packaged weight" doesn't. Compare packaged-to-packaged, and for car camping, ignore weight almost entirely — a roomy, durable tent beats a light one when the truck is doing the carrying.
Kitchens fail on organization, not stoves
Any two-burner stove boils water. Trips fall apart on missing lighters, dead fuel canisters, and nowhere to wash up. That's why the kitchen is a system page with a checklist instead of a stove review.
Tracked gear
REI Half Dome SL 2+
2-person, 3-season · packaged ~4 lb · two doors, two vestibules
Around $330
The default two-person recommendation for years running: livable space, honest weight, and REI's member support behind it. Car campers can go bigger; backpackers forgive its pounds for the room.
Check PriceTherm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT
Insulated air pad · R-value 4.5 · ~13–15 oz depending on size
Around $210
The pad that makes mid-range bags sleep warm. Air pads need care around sparks and dog claws; for truck camping with dogs, a self-inflating pad is the sturdier call, and we say so on the kitchen and kit pages too.
Check PriceJetboil Flash
Integrated stove system · boils 0.5 L in about 100 seconds (manufacturer figure) · ~13 oz
Around $125
For solo and pair cooking — water for coffee, oats, and freeze-dried meals — nothing is simpler. It's a water boiler, not a chef's stove; groups and real cooking belong to the two-burner in the kitchen system.
