Fishing: Electronics First, Tackle Second
The money in modern fishing is in sonar. A fish finder changes what a day on the water is; another lure mostly doesn't. This hub leads with electronics — open-water units now, a full ice-fishing build for winter — and covers tackle as the supporting act it is.

Imaging type is the real fork
Traditional 2D sonar shows echoes; CHIRP cleans them up with better target separation; down imaging shows near-photo detail under the boat; side imaging scouts structure to both sides. Each step roughly doubles usefulness and adds cost. For most inland anglers, CHIRP 2D + down imaging is the sweet spot.
Screen size beats screen resolution
On a rocking boat in sunlight, a 7-inch screen at modest resolution out-fishes a gorgeous 5-inch. Split-screen sonar + mapping is where small screens really suffer. Buy the biggest screen the budget survives — it's the spec owners consistently say they under-bought.
Mapping is a subscription question
Built-in lake maps vary hugely by brand and region. Check coverage of your actual home water before buying; premium map cards and subscriptions ($100–$200/yr class) are part of the real cost of ownership, and they never appear in the headline price.

Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv
7-inch · CHIRP 2D + ClearVu + SideVu · GPS waypoint marking (no lake maps)
Around $550
The value benchmark in 7-inch sonar: all three imaging modes and Garmin's transducer engineering, traded against no built-in chartplotting. If you fish known water, that's the right trade. Humminbird and Lowrance don't sell direct affiliate programs we could verify — units like these route through retailers.
Check PriceHumminbird Helix 7 CHIRP
7-inch · CHIRP 2D/DI/SI models · LakeMaster mapping ecosystem
Around $550–$750 by model
The mapping-first alternative: LakeMaster coverage of northern and midwestern water is the deepest in the business, which is also why the Helix line anchors so many ice bundles. Choose the model letter soup carefully — SI (side imaging) is the one worth paying for.
Check PriceLowrance HOOK Reveal 7
7-inch · CHIRP + DownScan · C-MAP mapping options
Around $450–$550
The budget-conscious 7-inch: slightly less refined software than Garmin or Humminbird, honest sonar underneath, and frequent sale pricing that makes it the cheapest way into a big screen.
