Satellite Communicators & GPS
Cell coverage ends a lot closer to town than most people think. A satellite communicator is the device that turns "no signal" from an emergency into an inconvenience: two-way texting from anywhere, and an SOS button that reaches a 24/7 rescue coordination center. This hub is deliberately narrow — devices, plans, and the real cost of ownership.

Gifts Under $250 That Look Like You Spent More
A communicator is the rare gift that says 'come home safe' without saying it out loud. It's the anchor pick of the under-$250 guide.

1. Two-way messaging
One-way beacons can only shout. Two-way devices let you text "I'm fine, running a day late" and receive "okay" back — which prevents more rescue calls than the SOS button ever will. Every device we track does two-way.
2. The plan is the product
Devices cluster at $200–$400; plans run roughly $12–$65 a month depending on message volume, with annual and monthly flavors. Over three years the plan costs more than the hardware. The explainer prices out total cost of ownership, not sticker prices.
3. Battery and weight for how you travel
The inReach Mini 2 weighs 3.5 ounces and runs up to two weeks per charge in tracking mode by Garmin's figures; bigger units trade weight for screens and faster messaging. Truck-based travelers can ignore both numbers; backpackers can't.
The devices we track
Garmin inReach Mini 2
3.5 oz · two-way texting + SOS · up to 14-day battery (10-min tracking, manufacturer figure)
List $400
The category benchmark for a decade: smallest, lightest, deepest plan menu, and the Iridium network's true global coverage. The screen is tiny and typing is phone-dependent — the honest trade for the weight.

Two-way texting + SOS · larger battery than Mini 2 · no navigation screen
List $300
The value pick in Garmin's line: same network and SOS, longer battery, lower price, in exchange for giving up onboard navigation. For truck and boat use where a phone handles maps, it's arguably the smarter buy.

Two-way texting + SOS · Iridium network · seamless cell/Wi-Fi handoff in app
Around $200
The challenger: cheaper hardware, plans that undercut Garmin at several tiers, and messaging that follows you between satellite and cell without changing threads. Weather and check-in features are strong. A genuinely competitive alternative, not a knockoff.
